About Catherina

Catherina O’Keeffe from Duagh, Co. Kerry began her studies in Environmental and Analytical Science in 2002. After completing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) with first class honours in Chemical Instrumentation and Analytical Methods, she applied for a government assisted internship and was one of twenty people chosen throughout Ireland. The 6 month internship was based at the Space Life Sciences Laboratory at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. During her 6 months she helped leading NASA scientists to develop new air revitalisation systems for use on-board future shuttle missions and in particular the future mission to Mars. On completion of this internship she became employed by Temmler, a leading German-based pharmaceutical company for two and a half years. In October 2009, she began a PhD in the area of biotechnology and controlled environment life support systems. During the course of her study she returned to the Kennedy Space Centre for further specialised training and is now in her second year of study with the CELLS research group at LIT. She is hoping to graduate in 2012.
